Maykayla’s Street Jam 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament

The Ferndale Chamber is proud to announce that we have joined forces with the Nicolaas Family and coordinating the Makayla’s Street Jam.

Makayla was born September 29, 1998 to Rick and Karen Nicolaas.  Makayla’s joined older sisters Mackenzie and Mallory and older brother Bryson.  She loved animals, outdoors, and many sports, particularly basketball.

In the middle of the summer leading to her 6th grade year, Makayla was diagnosed as having a form of Bells Palsy and told that it would subside.  When it didn’t, she went to Children’s Hospital and Cranial-Facial clinic to see what could be done.  On August 3, 2011 at 12 years old, she was diagnosed with cancer.

Makayla fought a tough battle during the next 11 months.  There were appointments, procedures and surgeries, but she conquered each one like a champ.  Her faithful friend Savanna was with her every step of the way!  Makayla’s battle ended on July 8th 2012.

She had a tremendous impact in the competitive basketball arena.  Many teams reached out to her family during her fight and after she passed.  It was amazing to see the compassion and support from families all over Whatcom County.  When Makayla needed the support, they were right there.

Once of Makayla’s favorite things was to compete in 3-on-3 tournaments.  She had an intense sense of competition and was incredibly tough.  By hosting a 3-on-3 in her name, we will be celebrating her love of the sport, remembering how fierce of a competitor she was, and raising funds to help fight childhood cancers.  No child should have to fight this fight.

After five years of a dedicated and wonderful committee of friends and family, who created this event as a way to honor their friend/sister/daughter, to a hugely attended community event, the Nicolaas family has asked the Chamber of Commerce to take over the management and organizing from here forward.  As it fits our mission of being the connecting force between our community and our businesses, we see our role as one of not only running the event but broadening the connection between our community and sponsors to create an event for Ferndale that leaves us proud and carries on Makayla’s legacy.

Application to play in this event are coming soon!
